The dials which came with
my Atlas lathe have 1' dia. dials on which only the 5 and 10 marks
are longer lines. The combination of closely spaced
graduations and the indistinguishability of adjacent marks makes it
hard to read. This design enlarges the dial to 1-1/2" dia.
which spaces out graduations.
If you also use a marking
scheme such as the one on this dial which creates more distinction
between adjacent marks it will do wonders for confidence and
precision. The graduated dial is zero-settable which also
reduces the opportunities for error. A hub replaces the
original dial, having balls which engage a groove in the graduated
ring providing both a smooth friction feel and keeping it
positioned. The stationary index mark is placed on a separate
piece which fits over the original flange for the crossfeed, or
replaces the diecasting for the compound feed. No permanent
modifications to the lathe are required, so it can be restored to
original configuration at any time.
The partial kits listed come with dials
which have graduations marked and numbers stamped. That is,
the external work is completed. These are the operations that
seem to be most intimidating to potential users. They will
need to be bored to size, have the detent ring machined and be
drilled and tapped for the locking screw.
